SUMMARY:Cold Case Investigations
LOCATION:Clark County Library
DESCRIPTION:Oct 6 Edgar Allan Poe\n\nFacts of the Case: Death of Edgar Alla
n Poe\n\nDate and Place of Death: Edgar Allan Poe\, aged 40\, died on Octo
ber 7\, 1849\, at approximately 5:00 a.m. (some accounts vary slightly to
3:00 a.m.) at Washington College Hospital (also referred to as Washington
Medical College) in Baltimore\, Maryland.\n\nOfficial Reported Cause: No d
eath certificate is known to exist (none was required at the time)\, and n
 o autopsy was performed. Contemporary reports listed the cause as &ldquo\;
congestion of the brain\,&rdquo\; &ldquo\;inflammation of the brain\,&rdqu
o\; or &ldquo\;phrenitis&rdquo\; (an antiquated term for brain swelling or
encephalitis-like symptoms). These were common euphemisms or catch-all di
agnoses when the precise cause was unclear.\n\nTimeline of Known Events:\n
 \nSeptember 27\, 1849: Poe departed Richmond\, Virginia\, intending to tra
vel to Philadelphia and then New York for literary business (editing a vol
ume of poems). He was reportedly sober and in good spirits when he left.\n
September 28\, 1849: Poe arrived in Baltimore. His activities and whereab
outs for the next several days (nearly a week) remain unknown. He did not
proceed to his intended destinations.\n October 3\, 1849 (Election Day): P
oe was found in a semiconscious\, delirious state outside Gunner&rsquo\;s
 Hall (Ryan&rsquo\;s 4th Ward Polls)\, a tavern/polling place in Baltimore.
He was wearing shabby\, ill-fitting clothes that were not his own and app
eared unkempt. Printer Joseph W. Walker recognized him\, contacted mutual
acquaintance Dr. J.E. Snodgrass\, and Poe was transported to the hospital.
\n October 3&ndash\;7\, 1849 (Hospital Stay): At the hospital under Dr. Jo
 hn J. Moran&rsquo\;s care\, Poe exhibited delirium\, hallucinations\, swea
ting\, confusion\, and periods of unconsciousness. He reportedly called ou
t for &ldquo\;Reynolds&rdquo\; (identity unknown) and\, near the end\, utt
ered &ldquo\;Lord help my poor soul.&rdquo\; He had limited or no visitors
\; accounts note he was too excitable for some. He never provided a cohere
nt explanation of the preceding days.\n\nKey Facts and Context:\n\nPoe had
a history of intermittent alcohol use and sensitivity to it\, but scholar
s dispute the notion of him as a chronic heavy drinker or opium addict. He
had sworn off alcohol for periods and was reportedly sober shortly before
the trip.\nNo clear evidence of foul play\, suicide\, or specific toxins
was documented at the time.\nHe was buried hastily in an unmarked grave at
Westminster Burying Ground in Baltimore\, with few attendees.\n\nStatus o
f the Case: The precise cause of death and circumstances of the missing da
ys remain undetermined and disputed. No definitive medical records survive
. Over two dozen theories exist\, including alcohol-related issues (intoxi
cation or withdrawal)\, cooping (electoral fraud involving drugging and fo
rced voting\, fitting the election-day tavern location and strange clothes
 )\, beating/robbery\, rabies\, brain tumor\, heart disease\, epilepsy\, ca
 rbon monoxide poisoning\, and others. None has been conclusively proven\;
the evidence is fragmentary and often contradictory due to inconsistent la
ter accounts by witnesses like Dr. Moran.\n\nThis remains one of American
literature&rsquo\;s enduring mysteries&mdash\;fittingly macabre for the ma
ster of the genre.\n\nJan 6 Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel\n\nFeb 3 Pope John Pau
